Birthplace of the World Wide Web, it’s perhaps no wonder that Geneva continues to make waves in the e-world. The University of Geneva has taken on the challenge of showing how an e-company can be successfully created in a traditional society by training mangers-and-CEOs-to-be up to a special e-business and e-communication certificate which covers the whole range of e-commerce, e-learning, e-communication, e-marketing, e-etc.
What sets the course apart is the close collaboration between the faculty and company CEOs. This follows closely on the heels of another University first last year when faculty and business-leaders offered a joint marketing programme. So popular with students was that first pilot with the auditorium was packed to capacity, including the aisles, the University expects a similar reaction for its e-course.
A spokesperson says ’We are very proud to be the only university in Europe offering such a close working relationship between faculty and businesspeople. This was our idea from the beginning; to have really close collaboration between the University and companies. This is part of an evolving training course because the domain is developing very rapidly and university professors are not the unique repositories of knowledge.’
Geneva region – cradle of start-ups
Geneva continues to see innovative start-ups from its region make waves in the global marketplace. There are a number of contributory reasons for the spate of leading-edge companies being born here. The city is home to the headquarters of the International Telecommunications Union, the World Intellectual Property Organisation, the World Trade Organisation, the European Centre of Nuclear Research (birthplace of the World Wide Web) and is one of the leading congress cities of the world.
The whole Geneva region is committed to encouraging start-ups generally, and in the New Economy and e-business in particular. Much of this activity centres on one of the leading academic institutions in Switzerland 25 minutes from Geneva, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL). This exceptional institution has a chair in entrepreneurship and an important start-up incubator on campus. There are considerable spin-off effects while major synergies are being generated both with Swiss companies and institutions as well as the many multinationals in the region.
