The area of France surrounding Geneva is a source of highly-qualified, well-educated cross-border commuters who supplement the Geneva residential working population in the many international companies and organisations that go to make Geneva the most dynamic, international city in the world, size for size.

Just released statistics show that in June 2001, nearly 31 500 trans-border permits were in use. The regular increase of approximately 300 new permits a month reflects the booming Geneva economy. The Geneva Federation of Employers says members have problems finding staff locally.

One important development is that nationals of European Union countries residing in those parts of France bordering Geneva can now obtain a trans-border work permit whereas previously this was limited to French citizens residing in neighbouring France for at least six months.

Geneva has a profound economic influence on a broad part of neighbouring France while the Franco-Geneva border offers many advantages on both sides because France is in the European Union whilst Switzerland is not. A long history of close collaboration has been the basis for many cross-border initiatives bringing prosperity and well-being to both populations.
