Fluid Automation Systems (FAS), a Geneva based SME, have just been acquired by the English firm Norgren. This transaction will enable the Swiss miniaturized solenoid valve manufacturer employing a total of 263 people to benefit from the vast Norgren network, which is present in 75 nations.
FAS are one of the world’s leaders in the field of solenoid valves, offering a broad selection of products. Solenoid valves are used in the field of medicine for dosing anaesthetic gases. Solenoid valves are used in the area of automation for controlling automotive assembly lines. FAS products are used in inkjet printers as well as in washroom facilities. They are used to automate the management of water and to permit the operation of textile industry machinery. FAS, which are not listed on the stock exchange, enjoyed revenues of CHF 53 million in 2003, accompanied by substantial growth in sales. Historically, company sales doubled every five years through the mid-1990s, and have climbed some 10% per year ever since.
FAS’s main markets to date are Europe and the United States, which are responsible for some 90% of company sales. The acquisition of FAS should enable the firm to enter new markets.
A background of enthusiasm and innovation
FAS were established in 1971, but the firm got off to a difficult start. Freddy Sarfati and Peter Merz, the company’s joint MDs and cofounders, believed in the innovative qualities of their products, but demand was virtually nonexistent. Success did not arrive until the 1980s. Now, 33 years after its creation, FAS has sold nearly 50 million solenoid valves.
Synergies that will contribute to growth
FAS’s cofounders believe that Norgren offers a variety of synergetic benefits. Their interest is all the greater as they are seeking to develop new products in the field of microtechnologies, requiring major investments. The English group hails this acquisition in view of FAS’s outstanding reputation and know-how in miniature solenoid valve technologies. FAS’s pioneering and innovative corporate culture also represent an asset to Norgren.
