In 1820, Nestlé was the first company to produce chocolate in Switzerland beginning a Swiss love affair with chocolate goodies that continues today with a per capita consumption of over 25 pounds a year!
Over the next 180 years, Nestlé moved on from chocolate to become the largest food group in the world with a turnover of some 5 billion USD and investing nearly 650 million USD in R&D last year. The Nestlé Research Center for Food and Life Sciences is located in a beautiful setting in the heights above Lausanne, the Olympics Capital, 30 minutes from Geneva.
The presence of Nestlé has a profound influence on R&D in Life Sciences in the broad area stretching along the northern shore of the Lake of Geneva to Geneva itself from where the presence of Serono, one of the world’s top three biotechnology companies, has a similar influence.
The area between the two giants has seen the spawning of a wealth of start-ups and public/private sector initiatives that are on the way to establishing the region as a major player in European Life Sciences.
