Geneva’s Serono: Biotech and beyond Print E-mail

Geneva has been home to an incredible number of discoveries, inventions and innovations over the years in science, technology and human organisation. No fewer than 44 Nobel prizes have been awarded to residents while history-making developments such as Rousseau's Social Contract and the founding of the Red Cross have emphasised the human dimension. The invention of the World Wide Web in the city a decade ago brought awareness of the city to a whole new younger generation around the world.

One of the reasons for this abundance is the presence of many world-leading companies and organisations in many domains that successively introduce important developments of global significance.

There is, perhaps, a special pride among Genevans for the success of Serono which is felt to be very much a part of the city having been here since 1977. Its charismatic CEO, Ernesto Bertarelli, was brought up in the city before studying in the USA. Serono reflects most closely, perhaps, what Geneva herself wishes to represent - a successful symbiosis between people and the changing world around them. A world that is more complex to live in than before. A world, though, where people are pretty much the same they have always been – ‘a baby born today is the same as any baby ever born’.

One of the keys to Serono’s success is in the Serono Pharmaceutical Research Institute located in a new industrial park in a suburb of Geneva. In the linked article, Tim Wells, Director of SPRI, offers the following view on the relationship between people and technology that starts, where it should, with the people actually working in the Geneva laboratories.
