Geneva’s view of Mont Blanc enhanced by 11 feet Print E-mail

French authorities have confirmed that Mont Blanc is now officially 15'782 feet high, 11 feet higher than previous measurements indicated. Mont Blanc is clearly visible from many parts of Geneva and, at just 60 minutes drive from the city, emphasises the proximity of some of the finest ski slopes in the world. This region of France is the most popular summer and winter spot for tourists in the country. Geneva International Airport and Lyons’ Saint Exupéry International Airport are the two main airports to reach the area.

Major economic area

Not only is the area between Geneva and Mont Blanc a heaven for tourists. The Valley of the River Arve that meanders from the Alps to join the River Rhône in Geneva, has a 280 year history of high tech excellence that began when the region became a key supplier of gear wheels for Geneva’s flourishing clock and watch making industry.

This is the second most important industrial exporting region in France after the Paris region and complements Geneva’s own orientation to international business and high tech industries. Today, there are over 800 small and medium-sized enterprises in the region that reflect Switzerland’s own SME make-up where 90% of the companies are SMEs.

With a shared language, history and heritage, the Geneva region and neighbouring France have a long tradition of working closely together. Today, more than ever, there is an increasing number of initiatives linking the two economic communities. In September 2001, Carlo Lamprecht, President of the Geneva Department of the Economy, Employment, and External Affairs signed an agreement with his opposite number of the French Rhône-Alpes region committing to greatly increased co-operation to develop the greater Geneva region.
