Previously poorly served by UK airlines that focussed on mid and South-East England, two enterprising UK airlines are opening up the North-Eastern counties of England with direct flights to Geneva starting later this year.
As other low-cost carriers into Geneva have discovered, what begins as a tourist route may be quickly adopted by savvy businesspeople. Geneva’s unique gateway role to the best French and Swiss ski slopes, fantastic summer tourist destinations and year-round access to the most cosmopolitan business city in mainland Europe are part of the attraction.
EasyJet, Europe’s leading low-cost airline, is now Geneva’s number one passenger carrier having overtaken even Switzerland’s national airline this year and offers some choice destinations around Europe. Easyjet, however, has neglected direct Geneva flights to the north-eastern counties of England.
Thus two airlines have taken advantage of the market gap. Jet2 will be operating three flights a week between Geneva and Leeds Bradford International Airport while bmibaby will be offering a once-a-week direct link between Teeside Airport and Geneva.
This development could have far-reaching effects. Leeds is the UK’s second metropolitan area after London and is seen as the liveliest place to be with major developments and a dynamism in its economic promotion that has set its mission ‘to be the best region in England’ (there are nine economic regions).
Apart from the great countryside and cultural heritage of this part of England that serve as a magnet to tourists, the region has a centuries’-old tradition of industrial and business excellence. A fine complementarity for Geneva’s own exceptional industrial and business interests.
